Không xa Phật vị

Một sinh viên đại học thăm thiền sư Gasan và hỏi ông: “Đã bao giờ thầy đọc Thánh Kinh Thiên chúa giáo chưa?”

“Chưa, đọc cho tôi nghe đi,” Gasan nói.

Người sinh viên mở Thánh Kinh và đọc phúc âm Thánh Matthew: “Và tại sao lại lo áo quần? Hãy xem các bông huệ ngoài đồng mọc thế nào. Chúng không làm việc, không dệt vải, nhưng tôi nói thật với các bạn ngay cả vua Solomon trong tất cả vinh quang của mình cũng không mặc đẹp như các bông hoa đó… Đừng lo đến ngày mai, vì ngày mai sẽ tự lo cho nó.”

Gasan nói, “Ai nói những lời này, tôi xem đó là một người đã giác ngộ.”

Người sinh viên đọc tiếp: “Xin và bạn sẽ được, tìm và bạn sẽ thấy, gõ cửa và cửa sẽ mở cho bạn. Bởi vì ai xin thì sẽ nhận, ai tìm thì sẽ thấy, và ai gõ cửa sẽ được mở cửa.”

• Gasan Jōseki (峨山 韶碩 1275–1366) là một thiền sư Tào Động Nhật Bản. Là học trò của Keizan Jokin, và có các học trò là Bassui Tokushō, Taigen Sōshin, Tsūgen Jakurei, Mutan Sokan, Daisetsu Sōrei, và Jippō Ryōshū.

Not Far From Buddhahood

A university student while visiting Gasan asked him: “Have you even read the Christian Bible?”

“No, read it to me,” said Gasan.

The student opened the Bible and read from St. Matthew: “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these…Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.”

Gasan said: “Whoever uttered those words I consider an enlightened man.”

The student continued reading: “Ask and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh, is shall be opened.”

Gasan remarked: “That is excellent. Whoever said that is not far from Buddhahood.” 

Annotation:

• Those are the words of Jesus of Nazareth–a truth on the art of living that surpasses all religious and cultural borders.

• “Take no thought for the morrow”: Live here and now. That is Zen.

“Seek and ye shall find”: If you seriously seek the truth, eventually you shall find the truth. That is the Buddha’s teaching.

“Not far from Buddhahood”: Enlightenment is not confined only to Buddhism.

• Gasan Jōseki (峨山 韶碩 1275–1366) a Japanese Soto Zen master. He was a disciple of Keizan Jokin, and his disciples included Bassui Tokushō, Taigen Sōshin, Tsūgen Jakurei, Mutan Sokan, Daisetsu Sōrei, and Jippō Ryōshū.
